The Perils of Polarization

American political discourse has become intensely polarized. On even apparently neutral issues, there is a Republican side and a Democratic side. As Unitarian-Universalists we value the free and responsible search for truth, but our politics seems to embody the exact opposite. How did this happen? How did we get this way? In a story that includes English schoolboys in a psychology lab, a notorious attack ad against Presidential candidate Howard Dean, and a Black musician who hangs out with neo-Nazis and chips away at their racism, we will explore the roots of polarization, how it affects us individually, and what if anything we can do to live our values and keep our sanity.
